Introduction

BYOND Policy Framework for Future-Ready Learning

This policy outlines the framework for BYOND Future, a Bring Your Own Networked Device (BYOND) initiative designed to modernize teaching and learning at Future World Schools. This will be implemented in Grades 5, 6, and 7 for the subjects of English, Mathematics, and Science. As personal mobile devices become increasingly accessible, this initiative aligns with the vision of delivering contemporary, future-focused education by enabling learners to bring personal devices to school to support academic engagement. This initiative fosters learning agency, supports personalized learning, and facilitates the seamless integration of technology into daily classroom instructional practices.

Under the BYOND program, only Chromebooks are permitted due to their cost efficiency, simplicity, and compatibility. Families are responsible for purchasing the device, and the school does not endorse specific brands or vendors. Devices must meet school-approved technical specifications and be compatible with the school’s network and software.

Minimum Chromebook Requirements:

  • Specifications: Intel N5100 Processor, 4 GB RAM, 32 GB eMMC Storage
  • Display: 10″+ HD (1366×768) or higher
  • Auto Update Expiration (AUE) date: 2029 or higher
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB ports, HDMI port
  • Battery Life: 8-12 hours
  • Additional Features: Integrated webcam, built-in mic & speakers

Note: Device specifications may be updated based on evolving technology standards.

Learners must use devices strictly for academic purposes and adhere to school rules and policies. The teacher has discretion to allow and regulate the use of personal devices in the classroom and on specific projects.

Key Guidelines for Device Usage:

  • Usage Purpose: Devices must only be used for learning activities and to access applications, files, or Internet sites relevant to the classroom curriculum.
  • Teacher Permission: Learners must obtain teacher permission before using the device in class and put it away when guided by the teacher.
  • Prohibited Non-Instructional Use: Devices may not be used for non-instructional purposes, such as making personal emails, voice calls, text/instant messaging, playing non-educational games, viewing non-educational videos, or cheating on assignments or tests.
  • Prohibited Content/Behaviour: Accessing unsuitable content, cyberbullying, or misuse of apps is strictly prohibited. Learners are expected to only store appropriate content on the device that is brought to school. In case of violation, the school has the right to deal with the matter according to the Discipline Policy.
  • Recording/Photography: Devices will not be used to record, transmit, or post photographic images or videos of a person or persons on campus during school activities and/or hours, unless otherwise allowed by a teacher.
  • Secure Storage: Devices must be stored securely in designated school lockers when not in use. Learners may not use their device in common areas, such as hallways, grounds, and the cafeteria, to avoid unforeseen incidents.
  • Respect for Privacy: Learners must not access or interfere with others’ devices or information.
  • Devices must be connected to the school’s official Wi-Fi using the school’s setup instructions.
  • The school’s network filters/firewalls will be applied to devices connected to the school’s Internet gateway. The IT/Admin team will monitor network activity to ensure a secure environment.
  • Attempts to bypass the filter will result in disciplinary action.
  • The school’s wireless network may not always be available, and network outages may occur without notice. Signal strength may vary depending on the location in the school and the number of devices simultaneously connecting to the network.
  • Learners should use only school-approved digital tools and platforms for academic purposes, assignments, and assessments. Learners should understand tool functionality, maintain data security, and respect intellectual property rights.
  • Printing from personal devices is prohibited at school.

Learners may use Google Chat Spaces for educational collaboration under specific rules:

  • A maximum of 10 users is allowed per Space.
  • Prior approval from the relevant subject teacher is required before creating or using a Space610.
  • Chat history must be kept enabled at all times.
  • Learners are not permitted to add members without explicit permission.
  • Creating multiple connected Spaces to exceed the user limit is strictly prohibited.
  • Any misuse, such as spamming or harassment, will lead to disciplinary consequences.
  • Misuse or violations must be reported promptly to a teacher or school administrator.

Note: Teachers may create Google Chat Spaces using their official school email accounts, and these teacher-created Spaces are not subject to the 10-user limit but must remain focused solely on academic activities. The IT/Admin team will review Google Chat Space usage every two weeks.

Device Maintenance & Upkeep:

  • Learners are responsible for device upkeep, including installing software updates, applying security patches, and maintaining antivirus protection.
  • Learners must manage and back up important files regularly to avoid data loss.
  • Learners must bring the device fully charged to school and must not depend on access to electrical outlets for charging at school.
  • The school does not offer technical repair services for learner devices.
  • The school IT officer/staff is not responsible for the maintenance, repair, configuration, or troubleshooting of any personal device.
  • The school is not responsible for any costs incurred due to the use of personal technology.

Device Security:

  • Learners are responsible for their individual devices; any security and damage-related concern will be the learner’s responsibility.
  • Future World School is not liable for any device lost, stolen, or damaged, including lost or corrupted data on a device. If a device is stolen or damaged, it will be sorted out through the administrative office involving both parties.
  • Learners must enable the device locator feature.
  • Learners must have protective cases for their Chromebooks.
  • Digital safety is an important component of B-YOND, and parents/guardians must be aware of appropriate online behaviours. Cyber-safety rules must be frequently revised with learners to serve as a reminder and reinforcement about safe online behaviours.

Consequences for Violations:

  • Bringing on the premises or infecting the network with a virus, Trojan, or program designed to damage, alter, destroy, or provide access to unauthorized data or information is a violation of school policies and will result in disciplinary/legal action.
  • Processing or accessing information on school property related to hacking, altering, or bypassing network security policies is a violation of school policies and will result in disciplinary/legal action.
  • School officials (including IT officers) have the right to collect and examine any device if there is reason to believe that school policies, regulations, or guidelines on use of the device have been violated, or if the device contains evidence of a violation of rules, policies, or laws.
  • Inappropriate use or violation of FWS technology resources will have consequences according to the Discipline Policy of the school.
  • Depending upon the severity, the school principal has the right to take away the device for the rest of the school day or longer and may require parents to sign an undertaking to get the device back.
  • The school principal reserves the right to suspend the privilege of using the device at school.
  • The school will not be held responsible for any damage or data loss, including losses resulting from connecting devices to the school’s wireless network or power outlets12.

Device Borrowing:

  • If a learner’s device becomes non-functional, they may borrow a school device for up to three days, subject to approval from a teacher.

To participate responsibly in the BYOND program, all learners are required to:

  • Thoroughly read and understand the BYOND guidelines.
  • Submit a signed Learner Agreement Form that confirms their commitment to appropriate device usage, adherence to school policies, and responsible digital behaviour.
  • Learners and parents/guardians participating in BYOND must adhere to the School Policies. By signing, learners and parents acknowledge the outlined standards and practices.

Welcome to BYOND Future. Bring Your Own Networked Device at Future World School – The landmark programme giving your child fluent mastery of the two most powerful technology ecosystems on the planet: Google and Microsoft.

THE REVOLUTION

WHAT IS B-YOND FUTURE?

For years, the world debated which platform was best for a child’s education. We knew that was the wrong question. The real question is: “Why should our children be forced to choose?”

The greatest innovations, the biggest breakthroughs, the most world-changing ideas happen at the intersection of different ways of thinking.

BYOND Future is our definitive answer. It is a complete reimagining of the classroom. It is our bold declaration that a TME and FWS graduate will be digitally bilingual, fluent in the collaborative genius of Google and the professional power of Microsoft.

This isn’t about giving them a Chromebook. It’s about rewiring their approach to problem-solving, equipping them to think with an agility and perspective that others simply will not have. We’re not just preparing them for the future; we’re giving them the tools to build it.
